I don’t know much about this song; KCRW has played it a few times, including yesterday. The quality isn’t great, because this comes from their internet stream. They claim the album is forthcoming, but I can’t find much about the forthcoming album, but if and when I find out, I’ll update the post. In the mean time, enjoy this kick ass track from the Teddybears. It opens:
“I’m not a rocket scientist / I rock the house and sign the checks and that’s it / Don’t take no astrophysicist to make you blow out your system, kick it”.
Rocket Science (MP3) (N.B. Once the song was described as “Roket Science” on the KCRW feed, unclear if that was a typo or the correct spelling)
In 2004 and 2005 I was touring with the Pixies. I was a co-founder of two music companies that recorded and sold concerts on CD. One of the members of the crew who I became good friends with shared with me the most amazing recording from a high school band. It was the stuff of legend; something everyone else had already heard and couldn’t stop talking about. I can’t say too much more about where the band is from, or why the recording was available, but I can say this: I knew the moment I heard this recording that I wanted to produce & sell this record.
Everyone who heard the tape loved it, though no one could explain why. Maybe it’s the screaming fans? The pratfall? The earnestness of our emcee? It doesn’t do much good to explain it, the best thing to do is to simply listen. I purchased the recording and we sent it to get mastered, a job that was completed on November 19, 2005. After that, life got in the way. The original plan was to put High School Band Concert out on CD, packaged in one of those old-school cardboard boxes three times bigger than the CD itself, designed to fit into a record store’s old record shelves. But before any of that happen, the project stalled, and the master recording has sat on my bookshelf. Until now.
Available here, a gift to the world, is High School Band Concert. Download any individual track, or the entire 28 minute CD.

I’ve been listening a lot to The Deadbeats new album, Made In The Shade, ever since KCRW started playing Turtle as a fill into and out of break in the past few weeks. The album itself is fantastic… perfectly downbeat and great for studying or reading… when you need some noise to keep you going, but not so much that you get completely distracted. I could play Turtle in a loop for an hour and probably never notice.
